What are Zygomatic Implants?

Traditional dental implants anchor directly into the jawbone. When the upper jawbone has resorbed too much to support them, zygomatic implants offer an alternative. Instead of anchoring into the jaw, these fixtures are much longer and are anchored securely into the zygomatic bone, commonly known as the cheekbone.

Where They Fit: The Implant Spectrum

• Regular Implants: Placed directly into healthy jawbone; the standard option when bone density is sufficient.

• Zygomatic Implants: An intermediate solution; utilized when the upper jawbone lacks the volume for regular implants, anchoring instead into the cheekbone to bypass the need for extensive bone grafting.

• Subperiosteal Implants: Often utilized as a more extensive last resort when neither regular nor zygomatic options are viable, relying on a custom framework resting on top of the bone.

• Surgical Complexity: Because the implants anchor into the cheekbone through delicate facial structures, the procedure requires advanced surgical training and is typically performed by specialized oral and maxillofacial surgeons under general anaesthesia.

• Timeline: The process involves detailed 3D digital planning, precise surgical placement, and a subsequent healing phase before the final prosthetic teeth can be attached. 3 full days on the first visit and second visit 6 months later for 6 full business days.
