Monolithic Zirconium Crowns

What is a Zirconium Crown?

A dental crown is a custom-fitted cap placed over a prepared tooth to restore its strength, shape, size, and appearance. A zirconium crown specifically utilizes a robust zirconium dioxide framework, offering exceptional durability and a natural look.

Procedure and Pain Management

Will I feel pain during the procedure?

The tooth preparation process is performed under local anesthesia to ensure comfort, though the initial administration of the local anaesthesia is not quite comfortable. Temporary crowns are placed ON DAY ONE to protect the teeth and prevent hot or cold sensitivity. While a small number of patients may experience mild tingling, the process is generally completed smoothly.

How long does the treatment take?

The treatment is typically completed in five full business days. Multiple fitting appointments may be scheduled depending on the patient's and dentist's satisfaction with the fit and appearance.

What happens during the procedure?

  1. Tooth Preparation: The natural tooth is gently reduced by approximately one to two millimeters to make room for the crown.

  2. Impressions: 3D impressions with 3Shape Dental Scanners are taken and sent to the laboratory.

  3. Physical Rehearsals with 3D Printed teeth: A rehearsal takes place on day two for the patient to choose the shape and shade of the finals and make alterations on the rehearsal teeth, zirconium crowns go into production on day 2 and will be ready on day 3
  4. Fabrication: The custom zirconium crown is meticulously crafted to match the appropriate shade and structure using the 3D impressions and digital scans theyre produced in house at our lab.

  5. Cementation: The final crown is checked for a precise fit, adjusted as necessary, and permanently cemented into place with 3M ESPE Ketac Cem Plus dental Cement.

Advantages and Benefits

  • Aesthetics: Zirconium provides high light transmittance, eliminating the opaque, lifeless look associated with traditional metal-fused porcelain crowns. It prevents dark lines from showing at the gum line and delivers a natural, healthy appearance.

  • Biocompatibility: The material is non-allergenic and highly compatible with the human body.

  • Sensitivity and Taste: Patients typically do not experience hot or cold sensitivity, and because the structure contains no metal, it will not cause a metallic taste or mouth odor but post treatment sensitivity can be experienced for a couple of weeks.

  • Color Stability: The smooth, polished surface prevents plaque accumulation, meaning it resists staining from coffee, tea, and tobacco, ensuring the color remains stable over time.

  • Strength: Monolithic Zirconium is exceptionally strong, making it ideal for withstanding heavy chewing forces on posterior teeth and doesnt chip in normal use.

Indications and Usage

Why choose zirconium crowns?

  • To correct severe tooth discoloration that does not respond to bleaching methods.

  • To close gaps (diastemas) where orthodontic treatment is not preferred or sufficient.

  • To restore fractured, discrete, or heavily worn teeth.

  • To replace old, structurally compromised fillings.

  • To serve as strong, aesthetic bridge components for back teeth.

Who can receive zirconium crowns?

The treatment can be performed at any age after permanent teeth have fully erupted. However, for younger patients under the age of 18 to 20, jaw development is still ongoing, which can cause spacing changes as the jaw grows.

Care and Longevity

  • How long do they last? With proper daily hygiene and regular dental check-ups every six months, zirconium crowns can last for many years and should be replaced once gum recession reveals the tooth beneath the crowns.

  • How should they be cared for? They require the same care as natural teeth: brushing twice a day, flossing daily, and attending biannual professional evaluations to prevent future complications.
